About this book
In Oxford, Mississippi, 1933, eleven-year-old Meg Lefleur is an 'unadoptable' girl at the town’s orphanage, having learned to rely on no one since her mother disappeared. She meets Birdie, a young woman determined to confront her socialite sister about the impoverished family she left behind. As the Depression worsens, Birdie suspects her sister's life is built on lies. Later, Birdie encounters Charlie, a woman pushed to the brink by loss. Drawn together by circumstance, these women find unexpected kinship among a determined group. However, in a town steeped in hypocrisy, even small acts of defiance can lead to dangerous consequences.
